What is Hypnotherapy?

Hypnotherapy is a powerful therapeutic technique which can “rewire” your mind to achieve positive and transformative change. It is a safe, natural and effective process.

Hypnotherapy involves achieving a deeply relaxed state of focussed concentration in which the subconscious part of your mind becomes more open to new ideas and positive suggestions to help change the way you think, feel and behave. It can help overcome a variety of issues and concerns such as negative behaviours, unwanted habits and limiting beliefs.

I will explain the hypnotherapy process and what to expect in our free, no obligation consultation. However, in essence it will involve you sitting in a quiet, comfortable space and listening to the sound of my voice. I may ask you to imagine some things which will just involve you engaging your imagination exactly as you would if I asked you to think of your front door, or the face of a loved one.

Hypnotherapy is a very powerful tool to help unlock your full potential to live a happy, healthy and fulfilling life.

What is the difference between hypnotherapy and hypnosis?

Hypnosis is a state of focussed concentration in which the subconscious mind is more susceptible to suggestions to change how you feel, think and behave.

Most people are aware of hypnosis as something that is used for entertainment in a stage show or on television. However, we can all experience hypnotic states quite frequently when our mind become absorbed in activities such as watching a thrilling movie, reading a good book or even when you realise you have been driving on autopilot.

Hypnosis is also used in hypnotherapy as a therapeutic tool to help people achieve positive change and desired goals. The purpose of hypnotherapy is to encourage positive change. It is not a form of entertainment, and I will not ask you to do anything silly or funny like you may see in a stage show.

What does hypnosis feel like?

Hypnosis is a natural state of mind which is very similar to daydreaming. In hypnosis, you are neither asleep nor fully awake. It feels a bit like the lovely, pleasant dream-like state you may experience when you wake up in the morning and snooze the alarm.

Everyone’s experience of hypnosis differs but most people describe feeling very relaxed during and after the session. Some describe hearing everything the therapist says whereas others find their mind wanders off somewhere else entirely.

However you experience hypnosis will be absolutely fine and will not affect the outcome of the session.

Will I lose control in hypnosis?

Absolutely not! It is common, and understandable, for people to feel a little nervous the first time they experience hypnotherapy but please be assured that your health, safety and wellbeing is of the upmost importance to me.

Hypnotherapy does not involve brainwashing or mind control. Whilst in hypnosis you may be aware of everything I say, or you may find that your mind drifts off and you become less aware of my words. You will remain fully conscious and in control whilst in hypnosis and can come out of hypnosis on your own at any time should you wish to do so. The more often you choose to go into hypnosis then the more relaxed you will become about the process.

Hypnotherapy is a safe process and you will remain in control at all times. I will not ask you to sing your favourite song or cluck like a chicken!

Is hypnotherapy safe? / Contraindications

For most people, hypnotherapy is a pleasant, gentle, and extremely safe experience. However, your safety is my number one concern and there are occasions where hypnosis would be contraindicated. That means there may be a risk.

If you have any medical condition, please ask your doctor to give their approval before confirming your booking with me.

I cannot work with you if you have a diagnosis of:

  • Psychosis
  • Schizophrenia
  • Pathological personality disorder
  • Senility

I may be able to work with you if you have epilepsy, narcolepsy, depression, asthma, or a heart condition, but will require your doctor’s approval.

Can anyone be hypnotised?

Yes, everyone can be hypnotised to some extent.  You will experience hypnosis if you:

  • Are willing to be hypnotised;
  • Have a genuine desire to change; and
  • Can follow simple instructions.
How many sessions will I need and how much will it cost?

The number of sessions that you will need will depend on your individual circumstances and the positive changes that you are seeking to make. Sessions can be booked as either individual sessions or as a package of three sessions. Costs of sessions are clearly displayed on the booking page.

It is likely you will experience changes within the first session. However, most issues that people seek help with are best suited to a package of three sessions. Sometimes more sessions may be required depending on the specific situation. We will discuss how many sessions you may need during your free, no obligation consultation. I will aim to help you in the minimum number of sessions possible.

The frequency of sessions is normally one session per week. However, sometimes it may be once a fortnight or once per month depending on the circumstances.

How long does a hypnotherapy session last?

A typical hypnotherapy session will last between 45 and 60 minutes. A stop smoking session may last up to 2 hours.

How do I know if you can help me?

If you are ready to invest in yourself and make positive changes in your life, then please book a free initial consultation with me.

The initial consultation will take place online on Zoom and will last up to 20 minutes. We will discuss the positive changes and goals that you would like to achieve. I will explain a bit about hypnosis, the process we will follow if you choose to work with me and I will do my best to answer any questions you may have.

If I feel I can help you then I will recommend how many sessions you should book, and how to book those sessions. I will tell you if I do not think I will be able to help you and try to refer you to someone that may be able to help.

It is important that you trust your hypnotherapist and feel comfortable working with them. Please be assured that I will not give you the hard sell and there is no obligation to book paid sessions with me following the consultation.

Do I need to talk about the past?

Our sessions together will not involve analysing or exploring your past.  The focus will be on the present and on the changes and goals that you would like to achieve.

You do not need to discuss anything with me that is painful, deeply personal or that you may feel is embarrassing.  I can work with you content free should you wish which means you don’t need to tell me what the issue is that you would like to change if you would prefer not to. It is important to me that you feel comfortable.

How do I prepare for the hypnotherapy session?

You can prepare for a hypnotherapy session by following these simple instructions:

  1. All sessions will take place online on Zoom.  You will need a laptop or computer which has a working camera, microphone and an internet connection which is reliable for a video call.  A mobile phone may also be suitable if you do not have access to a laptop or other computer device.
  2. I would recommend you wear headphones to ensure you get the best experience possible and have the best chance of success.  Do not worry if you don’t have headphones though, they are not strictly needed.
  3. Find a place where you won’t be disturbed where you will be able to sit comfortably with your head and neck nicely supported.  This could be an armchair, sofa, a high-backed office chair or just a chair with a pillow to put behind your head to lean against a wall.
  4. Place the laptop / computer camera in a position that I will be able to see you from your head to your hands resting in your lap.
  5. Set your phone to silent and make sure any alerts from email and social media on your laptop / computer are switched off or exit these programmes.  Make sure any pets are in another room and those you live with know not to disturb you.
  6. Make sure you know where to find the Zoom link for our session.  I will have sent this to you in advance at the time of booking the session.
  7. Please try to be on time for our session.  I always allow sufficient time between clients.  However, if we are late starting and I have another client afterwards then I may not have sufficient time to complete a full session with you.
What happens in the hypnotherapy session?

When you log into your session using the Zoom link provided then we will get started straight away. You will need to have your camera on and your microphone working.

We will already have briefly discussed during the free initial consultation what it is that you would like to change. I will ask you some questions to obtain more detail so that I can tailor the session to give you the best chance of success. However, I can also work with you content free which means you don’t need to tell me what the issue is that you would like to change if you would prefer not to.

I will explain briefly how the process works and what you can expect from the session so that you feel comfortable and excited to begin. I will ask you to make sure you are sitting comfortably with your feet flat on the floor and your hands in your lap, if you are able to do so. Then I will ask you to take a couple of nice deep breaths, close your eyes and listen to the sound of my voice as I guide you into a lovely and relaxing state of hypnosis where all change is possible.

It is as simple as that!

How effective are online hypnotherapy sessions?

Online hypnotherapy sessions are equally as effective as sessions carried out in person.

Hypnotherapy can be highly effective for a range of issues. However, for the best chance of success you must have a genuine desire to change. It is also key that you have trust in your therapist and feel comfortable working together with them.
